Email from Kassi 3/27/13

MOMMMMM!!! SO MANY THINGS TO SAY AND NOT ENOUGH TIME!
For one this keyboard is a little diff so bear with me. Every Wed we get 90 minutes to email and now we can email whoever we want! Friends, family, investigators, etc! So excited! So please tell everyone to just email me. I found out that I only get physical mail once a month unless you mail it to my actual address. so lets just do email for time sake.
okay sooo the flight we had awesome missionary experiences with some kids going on a nondemoninational church trip to slovakia for a week, super cool. we got to milan, they took us sorelle out to the cathedral and duomo to do some proselyting. we stayed in a hotel and the next day we were all antsy cause we found out where we were going and who our trainer would be. we were all soooo excited, like getting our calls all over again. i am in Bergamo, about an hour northeast of milano. In a cold, hilly area. google it haha. i actually live in alzano lombardo, a suburb outside of the city, our whole area covers the right side of all the outskirt suburbs. its huge. theres 10 different missionaries serving in our area. us and 2 anziani are in the bergamo 1 ward. we live with 2 other sorelle, one of them i actually met in the mtc once, she is from albania and already speaks italian so she wasnt at the mtc long. they are all super cool.
we actually just went to città alta, google that too. so gorgeous. i had my first gelato cone today. OMG. i will never be able to eat ice cream again. so my comp is sorella bunker, she has been out for 15 months. all 3 of my roomies are fluent.
to be completely honest, my first full day in my area, which was friday, was prob the worst day of my life. there was a transit sciopero (strike) and so we were stuck in centro, the middle of bergamo without a way to get back. we walked for so long. we also had consillio, ward council where we met our vescovo, bishop and everyone else, and i couldnt understand anything. i was so exhausted i kept falling asleep. it was like 2 hrs long. i felt so lost and i dont understand how people pick up a new language. i cried a little to myself that night. and you know i dont cry often haha.
but its gotten better. we talk to alot of people all the time and we had a member lesson yesterday and actually on that rough day we taught this awesome lady from bolivia, cristina. she was so receptive to everything we were saying but she is visiting her daughter in switzerland for 6 months! so we gave her a spanish book of mormon and said hope to see you again. tots coulda had her as an investigator.
oh ya IMPORTANT. we are opening this area, meaning neither one of us had ever been here before, we dont have an area book, we are completely starting from scratch in this city.
okay so some funny stories. we were talking to this guy outside the biblioteca, library, and idk whats really happening in the convo, but when i asked to meet up another time to talk more about religion he seemed down, then kind of drifted away from the idea and was rambling (italians are ramblers) and then i interjected again and said maybe we can talk tomorrow? haha i guess when i said that he was talking about how someone in his family died hahahaha. bad timing.
today i was ordering french fries and she kept saying 2 something, so i was like no 1. come to find out she is telling me 2 euro hahaha but i didnt know how they said euro in italian.
we were doing a teaching practice in district meeting and i was talking to anziano grimaldi who is from sicily and doesnt speak english, and i was trying to talk about gods love for us and how families are forever. and i thought he said he had two kids, so i was like PERFETTO! but really what he said was his 2 kids died...hahaha so his face was classic and he was like no perfetto! lol
the other day we were ringing the buzzer things to try to talk to folks, side note i dislike doing houses, but this one lady was talking to us out her balcony and i was like salve! noi siamo missionarie per...she slammed the door hahaha. so then i yelled BUONA SERA! haha
lots of cool miracles too! i am running out of time for all of this! tonight we have a lesson with Bach, a cool dude we met last night from the ivory coast who speaks french and italian. we were late coming home from ward council and he actually came up to us and started chatting. side note everything  thinks we are johovas witness. but we started chatting and i was understanding a lot of what he said cause he talked slower. it was awesome. we told him about the book of mormon and he said he loves to read so we were like heck ya!
theres a ton of african people here and actually a lot of people from bolivia and ecuador in bergamo. like a ton. kind of random. we have teaching appts with potential investigators the next 4 days in a row!
ill have to tell you more coolness things later sorry. we only got 30 mins today bc we were so late.
also remind me to tell you about this past sunday, i ate at a real italians house with like 16 ppl and a ton of courses. some food is amazing, some is disgusting. but thats life right.
well i love you tonssssssss!!!!!
ti voglio bene

** EMAIL FROM KASSI TODAY 3/14/13

Ciao Famiglia!
Come state? Molto Bene? Bravissimo!
(totally just copied that from the Anziano next to me haha)
AHHHHH. WE LEAVE TUESDAY!!!!
I am so excited! Not even too nervous, I am just pumped beyond belief! Big shout out to all of the people that have been constistently writing me throughout my time here, Everyone can still use dear elder to write me in the field, idk if it works as fast but I still would love mail! And sorry to everyone for being so slow about writing, I wish I could just dear elder back! Word on the street is they might be changing it for all missionaries so we can email everyone while we are in the field...hope so!
And I am going to be better about writing my emails haha they are always so scattered.
I get to call home! I bought a calling card, our flights plans are:
Meet up at the travel office here at 8, our flight in SLC is at 1130 and we fly to Chi town and land at 340, we have a delay until 6, then we hit London at 645 AM, leave London 930 AM and land in Milan around 1230. AHHHHH. There's 27 or so people of Milanos all travelling together, those folks on the planes are gonna be sick of hearing about the gospel by the time we are done with them haha. It's going to be so much fun and DUDEEE LONDON?! Errybody knows I have always wanted to go there. It's just the airport but shootz.
Mom, I am sending a box of stuff home to you, I'll have letters inside, my extra bed sheets, and my ipod cause I guess it's not allowed in my mission :/
Okay so this week, I don't really know what we did, it's gone by pretty fast. I hope the rest of my mission slows down. Learning lots of different conjugation tenses, sucks! Sometimes I do wish I went English speaking, but I know the language will come and it will be better once we are there. Let's seeeeee. So as you know we teach lessons to our teachers who play the role of someone they knew on their mission, and we had one instance last week where we go into a lesson, our teacher Fratello Cena who is pretending to be Luca, a somewhat atheist person, is like "Hey I need to tell you what happened." So I'm thinkin like ohh crud he isn't going to want us to come back! What kind of curve ball is happenin here?! He then proceeds to tell us how his uncle was in a car accident, a pretty bad one. and our previous lesson was about the Holy Ghost and the major power it is in our life. So he said he thought of our lesson and prayed, and instantly felt peace and calm. Even tho this is all fake, and keep in mind this is all in italian, I was getting a little choked up! Not to sound super cheese or anything but I was feeling the spirit when he was telling us that personal experience. I didn't even know what to say I only said "bello" at first. So that was a cool experience. We teach at TRC every Monday, volunteers come in and are just normal members and we just teach member lessons, well last time we talked about the word of widsom with this guy who was kind of an odd ball haha but it went super well! I don't use notes or the vocab book anymore and of course my Italian is super broken but I was able to bear my testimony about the blessings of the word of widsom and how our spirits are more receptible to the Holy Ghost and pretty much the influence of the entire Godhead, when we are keeping our bodies like a temple. I even talked about you, Mom, how I have seen the blessings in your life this past year and the impact it has had on you. I am so proud of you. My comp didn't know that about you and she was like "Why didn't you tell me? that's awesome?!" I'm like idk not really a conversation starter, the word of wisdom in your family hahaha. anyways it's totally true, if the temple is the Lord's house, and we treat our bodies like a temple, we are inviting that incredible influence into our lives.
I am also in Ether 5 I think right now. There's only like 20 more chapters to read in the entire Book of Mormon. My goal was to read it before the field and I am totally going to do that. I am proud of myself! This is my first time reading it cover to cover, which is pretty sad for a missionary but whatevs haha. I am understanding things a lot more now.
Today was our last temple session for 17 months! Super crazy! The four of us girls all put our arms around each other in the Celestial room and looked in the mirror. Super cheese but it was cool haha. I am sad my little district crew won't all be together :/ I love them! Seriously best friend status man.
So ma, I'm going to try to call you in salt lake and chicago, for sure chi town. dunno how it's going to be in salt lake like how crazy it will be with all of us. I will call you using quarters first in case you dont answer the first time, i guess there's 500 mins on the card and it will take 130 a call regardless if you use it or not. super lame. oh i bought two suitcases already, im just leaving those 1970s granny wheelers here. I will try to hop on again and send photos, this comp doesnt do it.
TI VOGLIO BENE!!!
(It means I love you.)

Side note, i'll need 200 for a bike i believe when i get there, and 100 for travels. 51 bucks for sure is for the 2nd suitcase.
Tell Maiyah I love her and I need her MTC address dear eldered to me asap so i can just leave the letter here for her, feel me?
Arrivederci!!!

Last email of the week from Kassi!  3/7/13

-
Okay so funny story of the week. Anziano Sloan and i wanted to know how to say excited, cause we were excited to be hosts this week. Our teacher sorella fairbanks was saying you have to use contento, which is like content. so we're like, okay that bites, WE'RE SO....content. hahah. later on I look it up in the dictionary and find the word for excited. So we were kind of all chatty and I holler across the room to Sloan and say "Hey sloan! (whatever the word was for excited." and he didn't hear me so I was like "Io sono (word for excited)." which is i am excited. my teacher looked at me and was like NOOO. hahah then my comp just busted up laughing and I then realized what it was I really said hahahaha. Anz. Sloan and like one other person who heard it busted up too. I was laughing so hard and turned bright red. i literally shouted across the room to an elder and told him I was excited...in a dirty way hahahaha. so funny. I'll never use a dictionary again.

Io so che questo vangelo e vero. Io so che Padre Celeste e vero. Il libro di mormon e il parole di Dio. Io sono molto grato per L'Espiazione e Lo Spirito Santo. Io sono molto grato per la mia famiglia e i miei amici. Ti Voglio Bene!!

She is so funny!!
Email from Sorella Kassi Gillette today! 3/7/13
The first line she is referring to us moving to California!

THAT IS AWESOME. i just wrote you a letter but i am SOOO HAPPY FOR YOU. i am so happy for us! i know the lord is blessing you while i am away and for your desire to come to Christ. I am so excited for you guys! i can't believe all this is happening. i go to italy in 12 days, we get our travel plans tonight so i wont be able to tell you about them until next thrs. ;/ and we leave the following tuesday. I AM SO EXCITED. i love the mtc and i could totally stay 9 weeks like how it used to be, but i know i will learn the language better in the country. i have learned a lot, but i still have many miles to go. it's a struggle but it is a trial of my faith. i have learned so much about how i have been a slacker! the gospel is soooo important! and so intricate. i think i told you how they say you are constantly strengthening your testimony and reconverting yourself when you are striving to do what you know you need to do. i feel like i have had a few reconversion moments. i wrote you this but, i was in the celestial room this morning after doing initiatories, and i was reading in 3 nephi. i am almost done with it, want to finish it before i go to italy. half of the book is about when christ visits the nephites, i read part of it, it's chapter 17 i think? talking about how christ prayed for them to heavenly father and how it was so miraculous that they couldnt write it down in detail. it was beyond description. i got teary eyed. ive never gotten emotional over scriptures or in the temple as far as i can remember. so that was a big deal. i can attribute several moments here to my testimony strengthening.

I was on my email account so we chatted for a few minutes! It was AWESOME!
